Our Moderator
Joe Crawford, Bachelor of Arts in English Education, Master's Degree in Educational
Administration, Educational Specialist Degree in Education Administration, A Milken
National Educator, spent 36 years in public education at the high school,
junior high, middle school, and district level as an English teacher, assistant
principal, principal, and assistant superintendent working in multi-cultural environments
focusing on improving student performance. He has been recognized by the Illinois
State Board of Education in the Those Who Excel program and the Carnegie Foundation
in the National Systemic Change Award. Additionally, he was principal of a twice-recognized
National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. He was also chosen by the Illinois State
Board of Education and the Milken Family Foundation as a National Distinguished
Educator. He is very active in the Total Quality Management and data-driven decision-making
areas and has produced marked increases in student performance, teacher satisfaction
and empowerment, and overall building climate in the buildings and districts he
has worked with during his career and as a consultant. His previous district where
he served as assistant superintendent was recognized with a Silver Award from the
Lincoln/Baldrige Foundation. His work also has included involvement with five buildings
under his leadership or supervision being nominated for National Blue Ribbon status
and four winning such awards. He specializes in curriculum alignment, data-driven
decision-making, school improvement through teacher involvement, middle schools,
and system improvement. He works with teachers and districts to build capacity and
to create a common sense of mission and shared ownership of solutions. Schools and
districts he has worked with have shown as much as thirty percent increases in students
meeting/exceeding state standards in a single year. This is done while improving
teacher and building morale through involvement in the process. By involving those
who will implement the decisions in the decision-making process, he creates a sense
of buy-in and a much deeper understanding of state standards and the improvement
process.
